Aquarium CO₂: Do You Really Need It for a Planted Tank?

Adding CO₂ can supercharge plant growth, but is it always necessary—especially for tanks in Delhi homes or offices?

Let’s break down the role of CO₂, and when you can skip it.

What CO₂ Does:

CO₂ is a vital part of photosynthesis. In high-tech aquascapes, it boosts plant health, color, and growth speed. But many plants can thrive without it if other conditions are right.

When You Need CO₂:

  • You’re using high-intensity LED lights (20+ PAR)
  • You want to grow carpeting plants like Monte Carlo or HC Cuba
  • You have a densely planted tank and want lush, fast growth (more maintenance)

When You Can Skip It:

  • You have low to medium lighting
  • Your tank has slow growers like Anubias, Java Fern, or Crypts
  • You prefer low maintenance and fewer algae risks

Delhi-Specific Considerations:

  • Tap water: High KH and pH reduce CO₂ effectiveness
  • Power cuts: Can interrupt CO₂ diffusion, stressing plants and fish
  • Room temp swings: Affect CO₂ solubility and demand

Available CO₂ Options:

  • Pressurized Systems – Best for control and consistency
  • DIY Citric Acid/Yeast Setups – Budget option, less stable
  • Liquid Carbon – Great for algae control and low-tech tanks

Pro Tip: Always use a drop checker and bubble counter with pressurized systems. For small tanks, liquid carbon might be enough.
